10 Ways CBD Can Help With Your New Year’s Resolution

2019 is going to be the year of CBD

I absolutely love New Year, but probably not for the reasons you might immediately think. Last night (I’m writing this on the morning of New Year’s day), I was in bed by 9:30 without an ounce of booze in me or a single goofy 2019 hat in sight. Partying just isn’t my scene these days, and, to be honest, I’m not a big fan of huge crowds of rowdy people. In terms of my routine, I treat New Year’s Eve like any other day.

What makes New Year such a special time for me is its emphasis on reflection and evolution. It’s a time where we look at the past year, take stock of the journey we have been on, and turn our eyes towards the future with the aim of making the next year even better. It’s an opportunity for each of us to look deep within ourselves and ask, “What can I do better? What can I do to make myself a better version of me?” It’s a time for change, and change can be a tremendously powerful thing.

Now, I already hear some of you chiming in, “But Chris, you can change anytime you want! You don’t need an arbitrary day in the middle of Winter to make yourself a better person! This is something you should be doing all the time, anyway! New Year is for sheep and suckers!”

There is a lot of truth to that line of thought, but here’s the thing: changing yourself is hard. REAL hard. Making a genuine, lasting alteration to your behavior and habits is probably one of the most difficult things a person can do, and having a set day of the year to focus on that task is amazingly helpful. That our culture has one day where it’s acceptable, if not encouraged, for each of us to make lists of things we want to change about ourselves and talk to one another about them is an awesome thing. It helps bring self improvement out of the dark corners of our bookshelves and into a socially accepted light. It helps motivate us to do a thing that many of us are afraid to tackle on our own, and it helps us all keep each other accountable and on track.

So, to do my part in helping us all tackle our own New Year’s resolutions, I’m going to look at the top ten most common resolutions and see if CBD might be able to lend some assistance. Some of these or serious, and some of these are silly, but hopefully all of them give you something to think about, and hopefully some give you ideas that could help you make your own lasting changes.

Happy New Year, everyone!

1. Lose weight

This should come as no surprise to anyone, but the number one New Year’s resolution is to lose weight. According to some studies, upwards of 40% of American adults are obese, and those numbers seem to go up every year. Clearly, we have a problem with weight, and that problem is manifesting itself at the top of our resolution lists.

Now, I’m not going to sit here and tell you that CBD is a magic pill that will make you shed pounds, because it isn’t. Nothing is, for the record! That being said, some super interesting studies have shown that CBD reduces appetite in animals, and some other studies suggest that CBD actually promotes fat burning.

So, why not add a little CBD to your weight loss plan? It’s worth a try, and at the very least, you will still get all of CBD’s other amazing health benefits!

2. Eat better

Even though losing weight might mean you have to eat better, there are plenty of reasons why someone would want to tidy up their diet without necessarily wanting to lose weight. Eating clean can do wonders for your health, and it’s one of the best ways to make sure you are feeling good and energetic throughout your day!

This might sound a little ridiculous, but hear me out—making a conscious decision to add CBD into your diet might actually help you eat a little healthier. No, it isn’t because the CBD itself will somehow alter your brain chemistry and make you crave broccoli over hamburgers. It’s actually a weird little life-hack I’ve come up with. You see, I commit to adding CBD oil into one of my meals a day, and I just feel wrong adding that CBD oil into something unhealthy.

Think about it, you are going to feel kind of ridiculous adding CBD to nachos and are going to gravitate towards healthier food out of pure psychological consistency! But you have to stick to CBD tinctures to make this mind trick work. Naturally, it’s easy to get carried away with drizzling CBD chocolate sauce over ice cream…

3. Get more exercise

Moving more is almost always a good idea, so it’s unsurprising that this one ranks so high on the top resolutions list. Thankfully, CBD is wonderful as a recovery tool, and the better you recover the more you can exercise!

I am a triathlete who trains for multiple hours six days a week, and CBD really helps my body recover from my workouts faster so I am better prepared for my next one. Toss a little CBD into a recovery shake or eat a square or two of CBD chocolate when you feel that muscle soreness settling in. Physical fitness is as much about recovery as it is the workout itself, which leads me to…

4. Get more sleep

The older I get the more I’m learning that sleep is super important, and I find that a little CBD 30 minutes before bed helps me relax and get a restful night’s sleep. If this is on your list, and really, it should be on all of our lists, give CBD a try. Oh, and put that cell phone down while in bed!

5. Quit smoking

It’s crazy to think that there was a time when we didn’t know that smoking is bad for you. The same can’t be said now, so it’s great to see that this is still a popular resolution!

This study suggests that CBD may have therapeutic properties on opioid, cocaine, stimulant, and nicotine addiction. This other study found that CBD helped participants reduce cigarette consumption. So, if you are trying to kick the habit, CBD just might help give you the leg-up you need!

6. Save money

I already hear what you are thinking, “How are you going to spin this one, Chris? CBD costs a lot! How will buying an expensive oil save me money?”

Here’s my thinking: I hear from people every day who used CBD to get themselves off prescription pharmaceuticals, sometimes cutting the pills they take everyday in half, if not cutting them out altogether. And you know what costs a lot more than CBD oil? Yeah, that’s right, prescription drugs.

Not to mention, using CBD to help you out with any of the first 5 resolutions will make you healthier, and being healthier comes with fewer expensive trips to the doctor.

That’s my thinking, at least. Remember, though, that I am not a doctor, so be sure to consult with yours before you stop taking any medication. But why not bring CBD up with your doctor? It certainly can’t hurt.

7. Make more friends

That’s right, CBD can help you make friends! Turns out, researchers have found that CBD stimulates the part of your brain that encourages pro-social behavior. One drop and you will suddenly become the star of the party who everyone wants to get to know!

Okay, that’s not true at all. There is nothing, as far as I know, about CBD itself that will that make you friends. Although, now that I think about it, being a little less anxious might actually make you more pleasant to be around…

But I digress. Even though enjoying CBD won’t make you friends, I HAVE found that I’ve gotten to know some pretty awesome people since getting into the CBD community. I might even be able to call some of those people friends! So, who knows! Maybe getting interested in CBD and enmeshing yourself in the community might actually result in more contacts in your cell phone.

8. Read more

If you are reading this blog, then congratulations! You are already well on your way to fulfilling this New Year’s resolution!

On a more serious note, this one is a little tougher for CBD, but I have a thought. Way back in resolution number 4, I talked about taking a little CBD 30 minutes before bed to ensure you get a restful night’s sleep. Why not make a whole routine out of this? Make a rule where after you take your CBD you are not allowed to look at any screens and instead can only read until you fall asleep. Not only will this make it even easier to get better sleep, but you will also get at least a little reading in every night.

9. Travel more

Alright, I’ll admit that this one is a total stretch, but there MIGHT be something to it.

My fiancee and I will sometimes go on trips to cities with the sole purpose of eating all the awesome food we can find. We call them our “food adventures.” Both of us are vegan, so we will research a city and plot out all the awesome vegan food that place has to offer, and make a one or two day itinerary of non-stop vegan gluttony. It isn’t too great for the waistline, but boy is it a good time!

I don’t see why a CBD nut couldn’t do a similar thing with CBD! There are some awesome cities out there, like Portland with the Grön CBD cafe and Los Angeles with it’s CBD-infused everything, that would make an awesome excuse to get out of your comfort zone and try some amazing CBD goodies.

10. Live life to the fullest

Although this last resolution is a bit vague, it really gets to the core of what makes New Year’s resolutions valuable in the first place. Why go through all this trouble of self improvement, of itemizing our deficiencies and suffering through the difficulty of changing our habits, if we didn’t think it would ultimately make our lives better and more fulfilling? That’s what this is all about, so why not just have that be your resolution and attack it from all angles?

But this is why I love CBD and find it so appealing—CBD won’t instantly fix everything that’s wrong with you and it isn’t a magic bullet that will shoot down all the points on your resolution list. Instead, it can be a wonderful aid that can help YOU make your life better. It’s an empowering substance, in my eyes, and when looked at in the right way, it can really have a positive impact on your life.

Happy New Year, everyone! And good luck in knocking out those resolutions and living your life to the fullest!
